Night
Flowering Waterlilies
Night
flowering waterlilies are essentially a type or group of tropical
waterlilies with a number of distinct and attractive features.
They are
named for their trait of opening their flowers during the night
rather than opening them in the day like regular waterlilies.
However
despite this behavior the flowers are often open during daylight
hours as they tend to remain open well into the morning, and even
longer on overcast days.
The plants
flowers and leaves match tropical traits in a number of ways, having
the less round leaf form and flowers that are held up above the
surface of the water. However they have their own unique form to
their flowers and tend to have interesting spiky looks to the fringes
of their leaves.
Night
flowering waterlilies include not only the darkest pinks and reds of
the tropical waterlilies they also include varieties with the darkest
redish coloured leaves.
Night
flowering waterlilies prefer conditions at least as warm, if not
warmer than normal tropical waterlillies so they start a little later
than hardy lilies. It is best to order them from late November to
February.
NOTICE
Tropical lilies and many miniatures are currently dormant they will be available again in late spring or early summer.
