Floaters-

These float on ponds, providing shelter and food for fish. They use up excess nutrients from the water and eventually provide a nitrogen rich mulch when it needs skimming from the pond.
They create a soft surround and background for the larger and more dramatic waterplants. They have a place in most ponds but should not be released where they can escape to waterways .

Lemna minor Lesser Duck Weed World wide. Tiny bright light green floater that grows well in all but the coldest conditions -animal fodder in many countries.

Spirodela polyrhiza LargeDuck Weed World wide. Larger green duck weed for warm areas.

 

 

Submerged plants-

These plant provide underwater vegetation which provide oxygen and shelter for fish and keep your water healthy. They use up excess nutrients in the water and help keep water clear. They will grow rapidly in warm conditions but can be removed to make a high nutrient mulch.

All these under water plants make good habitat plants for ponds but are also decorative plants for aquariums.

Ceratophyllum demersum Foxtail /Hornwort Native. Totally submerged trailing plant with forked leaves, soft appearance.

Vallisneria gigantea Eel Grass Native. Submerged and anchored plant with very long straplike leaves

Vallisneria sp. Small Eel Grass Exotic. Submerged and anchored plant with long slender leaves

 

 

Low growing and mat forming marginals-

These plants are quite low and either form clumps or mats in shallow water areas. They are ideal to add colour, variety and shelter to ponds. They produce excellent habitat for frogs and fish to spawn and young to thrive in.

Bacopa amplexicaulis Bacoba /Water Hyssop Exotic Egg shaped pale green leaves with pale blue flowers towards the stem tips. An excellent low clump. Suffers from frost Completely submerged to moist soil .

Bacopa monniera Native Bacoba Exotic This lime green creeping plant grows happily in deep and shallow water and has lobed white flowers in late summer.

Cotula coronopifolia Yellow Water Buttons Native. Deeply lobed light green small leaves with bright yellow hemispherical button flowers in masses during warmer months. 20cm to damp soil -spreads by seed.

Dysophylla stellata Native. A native plant of northern Australia found in margins of lagoons and swamps. It has leafy plum coloured foliage and mauve flowers in Autumun/winter.

Gratiola latifolia Brooklime Native. Mat forming with soft light green foliage and white four petalled flowers in upper leaves. 15cm to damp soil.

Myriophyllum crispatum Red Milfoil. Native. Shorter more stout needles on long stems which colour red in cold conditions. salt tolerant, oxygenator and fish habitat .

Myriophyllum propinqum Common Water Milfoil Native. Fine pine-like leaves above water and finer when submerged, good oxygenator, fish habitat and forms a good evergreen mat. Deep water to moist soil.

Myriophyllum variophyllum Variable Milfoil Native. Fine spidery leaves below the water, shorter spikey leaves above the water. Deep water to moist soil.

Nymphoides minima Mini Water Fringe Native. Tiny kidney shaped leaves in clumps with many bright yellow fringed flowers, 5-30cm of water.

Ranunculus inundatus River Buttercup Native. Deeply lobed fine bright green leaves and tiny yellow glossy flowers held above leaves for many months. 30cm-moist soil.

These are the largest and most varied group of plants for use in watergardening. They can contribute colour, foliage texture, flowers, fragrance and shelter for pondlife.

 

Acorus calamus 'Variegatus' Variegated Sweet Flag. Exotic. Iris like leaf to 50cm tall vertically stripped pale green and white. 20cm to wet soil.

Baumea juncea Bare Twig Rush. Native. Fine, cool blue green clumping plant to 30cm tall. For wet soils.

Chorizandra enodis Echidna Rush A native clumping plant for wet soils good in coastal areas.Rigid spines to 50cm tall with round brown seed heads at the top.

Cyperus prolifer Dwarf Nile Grass / Dwarf Papyrus Exotic. Clumps of tubular stems topped with round heads, green turning rust to 75cm tall in 20cm water to moist soil.

Cyperus vaginatus Native Umbrella Rush Upright plant to one metre tall. The leafy tops are more upright than the introduced plant but it is sun and cold hardy for most areas.

Echinodorus cordifolius 'Melon Sword' Exotic. Large deep green pleated leaves. More cold tolerant than radicans.10cm to moist soil.

Eleocharis dulcis Chinese Water Chestnuts Exotic. Bright green hollow stems to 1m tall in warm months/dig and eat corms after winter chilling.

Mazus pumilo Swamp Mazus Native. Low growing ground cover for boggy conditions. Leaves flat on soil with tiny erect stems holding flowers. Choice of white or lavender flowers. Nominate colour when ordering.

Mimulus repens Creeping Monkey Flower Low growing creeping marsh herb, small lavender flowers. Marshy ground.

Schizostylis coccinea River lily. Exotic. Small clumping grass-like plant with crimson flowers in autumn. Wet to moist soil.

Wachendorfia thyrsiflora Red Root Exotic Clumping palm like plant, with pleated long leaves to 60 cm tall. Yellow flowers on tall spikes. Permanent moisture to wet soil. Sun or shade.

Carex fascicularis Tassel sedge. Native. Clumping light green plant for wet areas. Hardy to cold. 10cm to damp soil.

Deschampsia caespitosa Tufted hair grass Native. Spiky looking clumps of grass like foliage for shade or part sun and damp soil.

Houttuynia Cordata Court Jester Exotic. Heart shaped leaf is variegated in reds yellows and green when in full sun frost tender. Damp soil. Could be very invasive.

Deep water anchored plants with surface leaves (not lilies)-

These are plants which grow like water lilies in permanent water, anchored to the bottom with leaves floating on the surface or emerging above . They can add colour to ponds or flower at times that lilies don’t .

 

Hydrocleys nymphoides Water Poppy Exotic. Oval floating leaf with butter yellow poppy like flowers-sends out runners. 30cm water

Marsilea mutica Rainbow Nardoo Native Water fern in a four leaf clover shape with some red variegation on leaflets-floats in deep water, ground cover in moist soil.

Marsilea sp. Crenellated Nardoo Native. Furry four leaf clover water fern with leaflet edges scalloped .50cm to moist.

Nymphoides crenata Crenellated Fringe Lily Native. Bright green scallop edged leaves and bright yellow fringed flowers to 2cm across, 5-30cm of water early flowerer cold tolerant.

Nymphoides "Goondawindi" Yellow Fringe Native. Large fleshy leaves with a wavy edge and a deep red spot at the centre of each leaf. Robust grower in deep water.

Sagitaria subulata Exotic. Tiny oval floating leaves and papery white flowers. For shallow water 20cm to 5cm deep.

Triglochin procera Giant Water Ribbons Native. Two metre long strap leaf with tall flowers spike. 2m to 20cm.

Waterlilies-

These all-time favourites of watergardening come in three types, many sizes and colours. There are tropical lilies, temperate lilies and dwarf or miniature lilies.

Hardy lilies are available for mail order from September to February. Tropical lilies available for mail order from November to February.

They all require permanent water and need full sun for at least 4 hours a day to grow and flower well.

Miniature waterlilies-

Only need 15cm to 30cm of water above the crown to do well - a good choice for containers or small

ponds.

Nymphaea 'Tetragona' White miniature. The smallest lily available. 5cm leaves with many white star shaped flowers. Ideal for mini watergarden. Hard to supply- please contact regarding availability.

Nymphaea ‘Helvola’ Yellow miniature. Free flowering tiny star shaped citrus yellow lilies.

 

Medium sized and Compact lilies-

These plants flower well in shallow water and full sun. They are ideal for container watergardens and small ponds.

Nymphaea colorata Tropical. Compact tropical. Species not hybrid. Pale purple petals deep purple centre. Good for small ponds in warm areas.

Nymphaea 'Indiana’ Vigorous, free flowering, largest of minis, a range of apricot hues over flowering time .

Nymphaea 'Joanne Pring' Miniature pink lily Pink star shaped bloom, free flowering, plum coloured new leaves a feature.

Nymphaea "Laydekeri Alba" Hardy. Compact free flowering white waterlily.

Nymphaea 'Perry's Baby Red' Small lily with many deep red flowers over a long season.

Nymphaea 'Souix' Yellow changing to pink, free flowering, compact plant. Ideal for small ponds.

 

Temperate waterlilies-

These lilies grow and flower by increasing day length and so get going early in the season, producing the earliest flowers. They are often also called hardy waterlilies because the will grow in cold temperate areas. They prefer 30 to 50 cm of water over their crowns. Some can go a lot deeper.

Nymphaea ‘Formosa’ Light pink water lily, large flowers. Prefers deep water.

Nymphaea 'Gloire du Temple-Sur-Lot'Large star like reflexed lily with large number of petals. Opens pink and fades to white. Prefers deeper, cooler waters, and to remain undisturbed for two to three years to flower well.

Nymphaea ‘Hal Miller’ Large and free flowering white lily for ponds in sunny areas, for deeper ponds and dams.

Tropical waterlilies-

These lilies grow and flower by water temperature and so take a little longer to get going in the spring but then continue to flower very late in the season -even up to winter. They all prefer 30 to 75 cm of water over their crowns to make large leaves and impressively huge flowers.

These tropical lilies open in the after noon and close in the mornings, and will often also open on overcast days.

Nymphaea ‘H.C. Haarstick’ Magenta night flowering lily Deep maroon leaves and tall magenta flowers which open at night and on cloudy days -great colour combination .

Lotus

These stunning water plants prefer a rich bed of mud with only about 30 cm of water over it .It is a ravenous feeder and should be fed every month while it is growing rapidly. All types have fully round leaves on rigid stalks held well above the water and large flowers held above the leaves. When growing well the flowers may be up to one and a half metres above the water and 30cm across.

Nelumbo 'Perry's Sunburst' A clear yellow lotus. Prefers a long warm summer, protect from wind.

Nelumbo 'Cambodian White' Asiatic lotus. Asiatic lotus- lush growing white flowering lotus for warm areas.

Nelumbo 'Ross River' Native- A deep rose lotus from northern Australia, prefers warm areas with long summers.

Nelumbo 'Mary River' Native- A deep rose lotus from tropical Australia, likes a long warm summer.

Nelumbo 'Bunga Baby' Compact pink lotus for areas with warm to hot summers.

LOUISIANA IRIS AND WATER IRIS

Louisiana Iris are water loving iris originated in North America. From only four or five species thousands of colourful Hybrids have been developed and are now available.

They will grow well in a normal garden bed if watered frequently but really love permanently wet conditions or even 10 cm of water over the corm of the plants.

They prefer a large amount of organic matter and organic fertiliser and will produce lots of large and colourful flowers in early spring.
